K12 in the Maker Lab

We love hosting young people in the Maker Lab. We have a variety of activities on deck for school groups wanting to come in for a field trip. Whether you’re wanting to introduce your students to a new concept, kick off an academic project or plan a unique team-building experience, the Maker Lab is a great place to start.

All tours and sessions must be scheduled in advance. Most of our available times for visiting groups are mornings, from 9:00 to noon. Please email Maker Lab Director, Darren Wilson, at darren.wilson@acu.edu to reserve a date and time for your visit.

Maker Lab Tour & Tool Demo

Bring your group in for a fun exploration of our space, which will begin with a short talk about creativity, design thinking and the maker culture. After the talk, we’ll show you around the Maker Lab and demonstrate some of our most popular tools, like the 3D printers, laser cutters and cnc router. We will also share lots of interesting stories of projects that people have made in our space.

Intro to Design Thinking

The world is full of challenging problems in search of a solution. Design Thinking is a methodology used by teams to find solutions to problems large and small. In our Design Thinking session, we’ll walk students through the process and challenge them to identify a problem in their school or neighborhood that they can work to solve. Design Thinking involves empowering young people as they work together and think creatively to make their world a better place.

3D Design in Tinkercad

Load up your students and your class set of Chromebooks, and we’ll spend a session with them introducing 3D design using Tinkercad. Tinkercad.com is a free platform used for designing parts that can later be 3D printed or imported into other digital applications. Students will also get a close-up tour of our 3D printers and learn about different kinds of additive manufacturing. It sounds complicated but we know how to make it fun.
